Department to add air ambulance service
PONTIAN: An air ambulance unit and emergency medical and rescue services (EMS) unit will be added to the Fire and Rescue Department soon.
Director-general Datuk Hamzah Abu Bakar said 20 officers had been sent to the United States for training before doing their practical at Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
They would be able to carry out basic medical procedures during emergency rescue, he said.
He said the department hoped to train 612 paramedic officers within two years. He said the air ambulance unit would be launched this year.
“We have approval for two more helicopters. Hopefully we will get them this year,” he said, adding the department currently had six helicopters.
Hamzah said the helicopters would be used at bases in Seberang Prai for the northern zone, Subang Jaya (central), Johor (southern), Sabah and Sarawak. He was speaking to reporters after closing a survival camp in Kukup near here yesterday.
